Indian Government wants to go all electric by the year of 2030. For this, there has to be mass production of electric cars. The automobile industry had a lot of expectations from the Union Budget List but due to an increase of custom duty on electric cars and luxury car makers like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, BMW, Audi, Jaguar Land Rover, Triumph, Harley-Davidson feels there will be not much growth in the automobile industry.
Battery-powered cars are really expensive and takes a lot of time to be manufactured. It also needs a lot of time to get charged. U.S. electric vehicle pioneer Tesla wanted to do business in India as well, but as there is an increase of custom duty on imported cars there are chances they will back off. In this situation, will there be mass production of electric cars?

Will There Be Mass Production of Electric Cars?
- BMW, the famous Germany based company plans to produce 12 different models of electric cars by 2025. They are going to start their production from 2020. There has been a lot of pressure on carmakers to develop electric cars after it was found out that Volkswagen was cheating on emissions tests. The crackdown that has happened on the diesel cars can only be compensated by developing electric cars.
- BMW also includes Mini and Rolls-Royce brands and 2.34 million cars were sold last year. It announced it is going to shift towards into more of electric cars by 2020. The i3 electric car BMW was launched in 2013 and they said that they are making their factories ready to produce more of electric cars.
- Harald Krueger, BMW Chief Executive said that by 2025, they are going to offer 25 electrified vehicles which will be fully-electric and also added the electric cars can move up to 700 kilometers (435 miles). He added that they will be increasing the electrified models’ share across all model series and brands which include the Rolls-Royce brand and BMW M vehicles.
- Jaguar also came up with the same announcement that they will provide with more hybrid variants of an electric car by 2020.
- Nissan has already developed a new version of Leaf electric vehicle. They plan to make more productions than Tesla which managed to sell 83,922 vehicles in the last year.
- Toyota chairmen Der Spiegel initially said that Battery-powered cars with a long range takes a long time to get charged and are very expensive. He said that these cars don’t fit in the program they have made.
In September, they came up with a venture that develops the electric vehicle technology and made the partnership with Mazda Motor Corp so that they could increase the production of electric cars.
Toyota is trying to come up with solid state battery which can store even more power and takes lesser time to get recharged than other types present currently. Everyone has agreed to make electric cars by 2020 and give a replacement to the low emission technology. They feel that it is going to be big development step towards cars.
