The Volkswagen Taigun has been a significant model for the German automaker in India, helping to revive its sales. Built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, which it shares with the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Kushaq, and Skoda Slavia, the Taigun has made a strong impact. Recently, Volkswagen introduced another SUV in China, the Tharu XR, which is based on an extended version of the same platform. The Tharu XR is 134 mm longer than the Taigun.
Despite the increase in length, the Tharu XR retains the same wheelbase as the Taigun, with the additional length coming from longer overhangs. The new bumpers give it a fresh and timeless appearance compared to the Taigun. At the front, it features a slim grille with an integrated LED bar, flanked by sleek LED headlamps. The rear of the Tharu XR also shows distinct differences, with redesigned taillamps and a less upright boot lid, lending it a more premium look.
Volkswagen has not yet disclosed the interior details of the Tharu XR, but it is expected to have some tweaks compared to the Taigun. The SUV might feature a larger touchscreen infotainment system with a more refined user interface. Additional features could include a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, ADAS, an electric tailgate, and powered ORVMs.
Engine and Powertrain
The Tharu XR will offer two engine options: a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.5L turbo-petrol engine. The turbo-petrol engine will produce 160 Hp and 250 Nm of torque, with both engines paired exclusively with a 7-speed DCT.
Volkswagen’s introduction of the Tharu XR in China hints at potential updates for the Taigun in India, possibly leading to a facelift that could incorporate some of the new design and feature enhancements seen in the Tharu XR.
