Mahindra Thar Roxx First Drive Review: A Bold New Contender in the Mid-Size SUV Segment

Mahindra Thar Roxx: An Impressive First Drive of the New 5-Door Off-Roader

Mahindra & Mahindra is once again making waves with its Independence Day launch tradition. We recently had the chance to drive the highly anticipated Mahindra Thar Roxx, and here’s our detailed first impression of this exciting new SUV.

Enhanced Dimensions and Premium Feel

The Thar Roxx takes the beloved 3-door Thar’s design and expands it into a more spacious and upscale 5-door model. Measuring 4,428 mm in length—443 mm more than the previous model—the Roxx is also wider and taller. The increased length primarily benefits the wheelbase, which has been extended by 400 mm, providing more interior space and a substantial 644-liter boot capacity. The SUV now rides on larger 19-inch alloy wheels (18-inch on lower trims), enhancing its commanding presence on the road.

Design Evolution: Familiar Yet Fresh

The Thar Roxx retains the classic Thar look with its round LED projector headlights, exposed door hinges, and rugged wheel arches. However, it introduces a few new design elements, such as a distinctive 6-slat grille and updated C-shaped LED tail lights. Although the new roofline design may take some getting used to, it doesn’t detract from the overall appeal of the vehicle.

Modern Cabin with Advanced Features

Inside, the Thar Roxx aims to blend ruggedness with luxury. The interior boasts soft-touch materials, a new touchscreen infotainment system, and a digital instrument cluster. The cabin features leatherette seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a suite of modern amenities including wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Harman-Kardon speakers, and ventilated front seats. Despite the stylish design, the interior lacks ample storage space, which might be a drawback for some users.

Comfort and Accessibility

Getting into the second row of the Thar Roxx can be a bit challenging due to narrow door apertures, but the SUV is equipped with practical grab handles and a high-seating position to aid ingress and egress. The rear seats offer good comfort, with adequate headroom and legroom, although the seat squabs could provide better support. Rear passengers benefit from dedicated AC vents and USB charging ports.

Powertrain Options and Performance

The Thar Roxx comes with a choice of engine options, including a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol and a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel, each available with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. We tested the 4×4 diesel variant, which delivers 152.1 PS of power and 330 Nm of torque. The engine performs well, with smooth acceleration and decent NVH levels. However, the long clutch travel and springy feel can be tiring in heavy traffic. Expect fuel efficiency of around 10 kmpl in city conditions and 14 kmpl on highways.

Driving Experience and Off-Road Capability

On the road, the Thar Roxx impresses with its refined driving experience. The extended wheelbase and upgraded suspension provide a smoother ride over rough terrain compared to the 3-door Thar. Although we didn’t have a chance to test its off-road capabilities during our drive, the Thar Roxx is equipped with a robust ladder-frame chassis, low-range transfer case, and terrain select modes, suggesting it’s well-prepared for challenging conditions.

Safety Features and Technology

The Thar Roxx comes equipped with six airbags, electronic stability control, and a range of active safety features. Higher trims include advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), a 360-degree camera, and a tyre pressure monitoring system, enhancing both safety and convenience.

Verdict: A Promising New Entrant

The Mahindra Thar Roxx is set to be available in six trims, with prices for the rear-wheel-drive variants starting at ₹12.99 lakh and going up to ₹20.49 lakh (ex-showroom). The 4×4 variants, expected to be priced up to ₹23 lakh, will be available closer to the booking date in October. The Thar Roxx offers a compelling mix of off-road capability, modern features, and competitive pricing, making it a strong contender in the mid-size SUV market. While our initial drive was promising, a full off-road test will further highlight its true potential.
